Yellowknife sits at a geomagnetic latitude of roughly 69°N, far north of where its geographic latitude of 62°N would put it. Earth's magnetic pole is parked over the Canadian Arctic, and aurora follows magnetic field lines rather than lines of latitude. That's why the lights appear directly overhead here instead of low on the northern horizon.
